Is Cortaid safe to use on a cat that has a skin allergy?

My cat has been licking her fur off her belly and flanks for years now. I have switched her foods trying to find the source of her itchy skin but to no avail. Recently I tried putting Cortaid on the bald spots and now she is growing hair but I am worried it is unsafe to use... Anyone know?

Is Cortaid safe to use on a cat that has a skin allergy?
I am glad you know at least that skin conditions come from inside the cat not outside. I am wondering what foods you have tried. Could you post another question about that?

I would never use any human medication on my cats without running it by my veterinarian first. There are several pages in my natural care cat book under "itching". The most promising sounding: A Chinese herbal combination called Skineze (Good Communications 800-968-1738) A chewable tablet with liver flavoring and whey added to make it palatable. Tablets can be crumbled and added to food or given like a pill. Because of the whey it cannot be given to a lactose intolerant cat. Sometimes immediate relief sometimes it takes a month! Stan Gorlitsky, DVM is the one making it. Dosage comes on the label.

Topical: Ayurvedic Gel - Jody Kincaid, DVM from Ayuvet (800-881-8767) which sounds like it might be available only through a veterinarian. Call and see. "First class disinfectant and soothing action and reduces itching and irritation. Works as well as any cortisone cream I have used. One of its features is that once you put on the gel, it willl usually stay on. The herbal taste is a deterrent to licking off the gel."

Guess this isn't something you can run out and pick up today and since your problem (the cat's) is long-standing they are things you might consider trying.
Reply:Call your vet and just ask.
Reply:I hope you r joking!

Would you brush your teeth or gargle with Cortaid?

If you are serious - call your vet IMMEDIATELY!
Reply:NO do not use cortaid on felines. Please check with your vet he will give you somthing that is safe and effective.
Reply:best bet is to call your vet they will be able to tell you for sure.

I know benadryl is safe to use with cats. 12.5mg twice a day.
Reply:well if you already have used it and it seems to work i would ask the vet just in case
