My dog was prescribed Cephalexin for a skin allergy.?

After taking this med for 5 days I noticed her getting weaker and not eating. By the 8th day she couldn't get up off the floor and walk. Then she started breathing hard and started wheezing. I had to carry her outside to go to the bathroom. I suspected she was having an allergic reaction to the meds. The vet didn't think too much about it when I questioned him. I told him I took her off the Cephalexin. She seemed to get a little better. She could walk but was very shakey. The vet then prescribed Amoxicillin. Now after the third pill her symptoms are starting to come back. Now I guess she is allergic to this as well. Has anyone experienced this with their dog? If the meds are stopped will she regain her health? That is my concern. I just want her to start eating and walking again. She is 12 years old but up until this happened she was fine.

Cephalexin and Amoxicillin are antibiotics. But I would take her off of them and go get a 2nd opinion from another veterinarian just the same. What you describe is really odd symptioms to have with skin conditions and allergies and suggestions other complications and is worth a second look by another vet.
Reply:Both are derivatives of penicillin. She could very well be allergic to them. I would consider taking her to another vet. Those are not good symptoms at all!
Reply:Mine just started on Amoxicillin today for an infection where she got spayed 2 weeks ago. She hasn't shown any signs of slowing down yet but I am going to keep my eyes open for it. ALso she is 12.8 pounds and getting 125 mg . Maybe your dog is getting too large of a dose. Maybe try another vet...even just call and talk to another vet and see what they say.
